Threaded Special Ed.21 is a contemporary publication by Threaded Magazine that brings together Aotearoa artists and designers to explore the transition between Te Pō (the realm of darkness) and Te Ao Mārama (the world of light). The issue is grounded in tikanga Māori (customary practices), mātauranga Māori (knowledge), and kawa (protocols), shaping both its content and approach.
Sonic artistry and augmented reality (AR) are activated through printed motifs, bringing hau (breath of life) into the pages. Sound design plays a key role in creating a connection with the audience, and build a deeper sense of immersion. Structurally, the AR pages open with a chanted karakia and close with a mihi, creating a sense of balance that reflects Māori cultural protocol and dualities.
