Saints of Paradox is a project developed for my PhD in Art and Design at AUT University. It is a picture book that explores how narrative can be expanded through Augmented Reality (AR). The story follows a woman who, after forty years mourning the loss of her lover during the 1964 Brazilian coup d’état, lives surrounded by accumulated memories. When the only photograph of her lover breaks, a series of unexpected events begins to unfold. Each illustration can be activated through a tablet interface, allowing the reader to select between three different narrative perspectives. Three narrators—represented as saints—offer distinct interpretations shaped by their theological positions. Their values of compassion, orthodoxy, and pragmatic realism alter elements of image, sound, movement, and meaning. The printed page operates as a base layer, which, when scanned, reveals an interactive parallax experience that introduces depth and variation to the story.
The project has received multiple awards, including Gold (Moving Image and Digital) and Silver (Sound Design) at the DINZ Best Awards, and Gold at both the Canopus Awards in New York and the Communication Arts Awards.
