Carnival Land is a graphic novel created as part of a Master of Art and Design at Auckland University of Technology. It draws from my experience as an immigrant to New Zealand, telling the story of a young girl navigating a new and unfamiliar environment. In this world, people wear their aspirations as costumes in an annual carnival parade, using this idea as a way to explore how identity shifts and adapts when moving between cultures. The project is visually driven, using layered photomontage and large, expressive spreads that move between reality and imagination. It captures moments of uncertainty, transformation, and belonging, reflecting the emotional experience of living in a foreign place.
The project has been exhibited at Times Square in New York and has received recognition across several awards, including the DINZ Best Awards, the Australian Illustration Awards, and the Chorus Network Competition.
